Over the past years, computer technology has become a strong figure in soccer. The addition of computer technology to the game has offered various match data analysis and information, for example, the number of passes completed, shots, corners and many more. These data can be accessed during real-time video or post match, which means the data, can be inputted precisely after the event occurred. This technology saves time for teams or coaches to shift back and forth when they are looking for specific information such as the number of shots during a match.
There are 3 major types of modern computerized match analysis systems. They are GPS Tracking, Computer Tracking and Video Analysis. GPS and computer tracking can happen during real-time events while video analysis can only happen in post-time videos. Computerized systems which automatically calculate the positions and track the movements of players using camera, video and computer technology are becoming more commonplace. These systems require the installation of several cameras to cover the whole pitch so that every player is always captured on film, whatever their position on the pitch and the moment in time. Using complex trigonometry, mathematical algorithms and digital video/image processing techniques, player positions and movements can be calculated. These systems can calculate a range of data from a particular player. For example, it is able to calculate the distance run by a player during a match, the total shots the player took and whether it was on or off target, the amount of passes including the amount successfully completed, the number of off-sides and a few other figures.
GPS devices have the potential in being extremely accurate in calculating real-time data. That’s why it is currently in testing and might be used in the future; however GPS devices are fragile, expensive and relatively large.
Computerized match analysis systems are used for collecting, analyzing and displaying large amounts of data on playing performance and for simulating movement. Advances in modern technology allow these processes to be achieved more quickly and accurately. It cannot be ignored that computer technology is a huge leap in soccer and is having a positive effect on it. Back in the old days, these figures would be calculated manually and they would have to look back and forth in post-match videos. Computerized match analysis systems are extremely helpful and they have even more potential for future use. They have been a great development and one of the most technological influences in soccer today.
